Pai Gow Poker Introduction
Pai Gow poker is played with a 53 card deck in which the joker has the semi-wild feature of acting as an ace or completing a straight, flush, or straight flush. The game is played not against the other players but against the banker. There are generally up to six players and the banker. In the live casinos, a banker button is circulated around the table and players are allowed the option to take or pass on the banker position, playing then not against one person only but against every single player. This, of course, means that this player-banker has to cover all bets and must have a bankroll large enough to do so. When play is completed, the casino collects a five-percent commission on all bets. For example, a player who bets $10 and wins can expect a return of $19.50 on his wager. This gives the casino a small edge, which is understandably fair.
To begin the game, bets are placed according to the table limit. Next, players are dealt 7 cards face down. Then, two hands are carefully selected, a two card hand and a five card hand. These are placed on the blackjack styled table in set places, the two card hand to the front and the five card hand to the back. To win, both hands must beat the dealer’s two hands. If one of the hands wins and the other loses, this is called a “push” and there are no winners. If either of the player’s hands ties with the dealer’s hand but the other loses, this is called a “copy” and the banker wins. If the banker beats both of the player’s hands, obviously, the player loses.
It is important to note that when setting up your hands, the five card hand must be higher than the two card hand. If this is not done, and the two card hand is played but is higher, it is considered a foul and the player automatically loses. This is how it is done in the brick and mortar casinos. Most online casinos, however, will not allow it which is fortunate for the hasty gambler.
Pai Gow is a casual slow-paced game, fun to relax to and enjoy in a way in which some might be reminded of Keno. There are many ties which makes for an interesting, extended session without buying in for a lot of cash. A very appealing aspect of the game is that it is so easy to learn and to play. Unlike the Pai Gow domino game, there are no intricate rules. Strategy is a lot of common sense, and like all games of chance, various methods of play will be learned and mastered with experience.
